Protecting Our Islands: The Role of Coral Reefs and Mangroves in Hurricane Season
As we enter the start of hurricane season, spanning from June 1st to November 30th, it’s crucial to recognize and appreciate our coral reef and mangrove ecosystems. These natural barriers serve as our islands’ first and second lines of defense against the increasingly frequent and intense storms and hurricanes, exacerbated by climate change.
The Importance of Coral Reefs and Mangroves
Our coral reefs and mangroves are vital in protecting our coastlines. Coral reefs alone reduce wave energy by 97%, acting as a powerful buffer against storm surges. This remarkable capacity significantly mitigates the impact of hurricanes on our shores, safeguarding both our natural environment and our communities.
Mangroves, with their dense root systems, play an equally important role. They stabilize shorelines, reduce erosion, and provide a critical buffer that absorbs the force of incoming waves. Together, these ecosystems form a natural defense system that is essential for the resilience of our islands.
BREEF’s Mission and How You Can Help
At BREEF, our mission is to promote the conservation of the Bahamian marine environment, which sustains our way of life. As we face the challenges of climate change, protecting these ecosystems becomes more urgent than ever.
You can play a vital role in this effort by advocating for the implementation of Marine Protected Areas and supporting coral reef restoration initiatives. One impactful way to contribute is through our Adopt a Coral program, which directly supports the restoration and preservation of these critical ecosystems.
Get Involved
By adopting a coral, you can help ensure that our reefs continue to thrive and protect our islands from the devastating effects of hurricanes. Your support is crucial in maintaining the health and resilience of our marine environment.
