Stone Crabs: Take the Biggest, Leave the Smallest

October 15 marks the end of the Stone Crab Closed Season.

The season is now open until 31st May.

Here is a quick reminder of Stone Crab regulations:

  • 4″ minimum claw size.

  • Possession or sale of females is prohibited.

B.R.E.E.F. encourages you to practice sustainable harvesting methods for Stone Crabs (Menippe mercenaria).

Stone Crabs are able to regrow a lost claw, so harvesting only the biggest claw and throwing the crab back will keep them alive and provide a tasty meal for fishermen or diners.
